However, that was not the purpose. Instead, I wanted a site that would let me present the book, stored in as plain text as possible, on the web. Dokuwiki to the rescue: it stores pages in minimally marked up plain text. This allows me to edit the content with a text editor, while being able to trust dokuwiki to convert that into nice looking html for me.
